Why Use Fixed Blade Crossbow Broadheads?

With mechanical, open on impact style hunting broadheads all the rage for crossbow hunting is there any reason to go with the old fashioned fixed blade designs?

YES!

It’s important for crossbow hunters to remember that crossbow arrows (or bolts) are shorter in length than traditional compound bow arrows.

The shorter arrow length means less kinetic energy is retained downrange. Kinetic energy is important because it translates to impact, cutting and penetrating power.

Mechanical broadheads bleed precious kinetic energy in order to open upon impact, where fixed blade broadheads do not.

So the moral of the story is in many cases using fixed blade broadheads when crossbow hunting is a very wise choice, especially if you plan to take shots over 40 yards where the kinetic energy begins to decrease rather sharply.

Remember, a complete pass-through is crucial for creating a good blood trail when hunting with any crossbow, compound bow or recurve.

When you use a fixed blade broadhead with a crossbow you increase the chances of the arrow passing entirely through the animal. Period.

That fact alone is often a deciding factor for crossbow hunters wondering which style broadhead to use.
